macOS 27 known issues and fixes (updated for 27.2)

Applies to macOS 27 Golden GateReviewed 2 November 2026Tested on macOS 27.23 min read

Short answer

The most reported macOS 27 problem is Mission Control and Spaces: stuttering animations and, with more than one display, a black screen left behind after moving a desktop. As of macOS 27.2 (26 October 2026) Apple hasn't listed a fix, and there is a workaround. Other common issues are menu bar apps that stopped working, external displays flickering, and slowness or battery drain while Spotlight re-indexes.

Mission Control lags or leaves a black screen

Status on 27.2: not listed as fixed. Users testing the 27.2 betas reported the same problems.

Symptoms: Mission Control and swiping between desktops judder, switching to a full-screen app shows a black screen, or dragging a desktop to another display leaves an unresponsive black screen behind.

Workaround: on the black display, open Mission Control, click + to add a desktop, switch to it, then delete the broken one. The full list of fixes, from the gentlest to resetting Spaces, is in Mission Control black screen and lag on macOS 27.

Cause: macOS 27 draws the whole menu bar as one window, so apps that hid icons by moving their windows broke. Fix: update to a macOS 27 version, if one exists. Bartender 7, Hidden Bar 1.11.1 from GitHub and the Thaw 3.0 alpha work. Ice had no macOS 27 release at the time of writing. See menu bar managers on macOS 27.

External display flickers, has no signal or loses HDR

This comes up most with USB-C docks, high-refresh monitors and Adaptive Sync. Setting a fixed refresh rate and connecting directly instead of through a dock solve most cases. Step by step: external monitor problems on macOS 27.

Slow, hot or draining battery after the update

Spotlight rebuilds its index after the update, and Siri AI and language models download in the background. Keep the Mac plugged in and awake for a few hours and it usually settles. If it doesn't after a couple of days, see battery drain after a macOS update.

Software Update doesn't show macOS 27

The most common reason is that the Mac has an Intel processor, which macOS 27 doesn't support. Some people also saw Software Update fail to show updates while Rosetta was installed. Restarting and checking again helps. See can't update macOS.

Apps from Intel Macs

Intel-only apps still run through Rosetta on macOS 27, but this is the last version that fully supports it. Since 27.2, updating to macOS 27 no longer removes an existing Rosetta install. Find your Intel-only apps now.

Other reports

  • Apps drawer: the Apps icon sometimes doesn't respond until you click Spotlight in the menu bar.
  • Siri AI: "Ask Siri" can appear in context menus even when Siri is off or not offered in your region.
  • Virtual machines: creating a macOS 27 VM from a Tahoe host can fail. Upgrading a Tahoe VM through Software Update works instead.
  • OpenCore Legacy Patcher doesn't support macOS 27, and the project has no plans to.
