Apps that improve the Mac Dock: window previews, taskbars and tweaks

Applies to macOS 15, 26 and 27Reviewed 2 November 2026Tested on macOS 27.2 and Tahoe 26.6.21 min read

Short answer

The Dock can't show window previews on its own. DockDoor is the free way to add them, and uBar replaces the Dock with a taskbar if you're coming from Windows. Before installing anything, try the hidden settings below: you can remove the auto-hide delay, add spacers and stop the Dock showing recent apps without any app.

Built-in settings worth changing

In System Settings › Desktop & Dock, turn off Show suggested and recent apps in Dock, and turn on Minimize windows into application icon to keep the Dock short.

Hidden settings, from Terminal

Make the Dock appear instantly when auto-hide is on:

defaults write com.apple.dock autohide-delay -float 0; killall Dock

Undo it with defaults delete com.apple.dock autohide-delay; killall Dock.

Add an empty spacer to group apps (drag it where you want, and right-click to remove):

defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{"tile-type"="spacer-tile";}'; killall Dock

Show hidden apps as faded icons:

defaults write com.apple.dock showhidden -bool true; killall Dock
